At any time, a business needs help with any or all of these three things:

  • Traffic (awareness, site visitors, impressions)
  • Conversion (successful sign-ups, inquiries)
  • Retention (successful renewals and repeat business)

You always want to be working on all three things, but for marketing purposes, we'll focus on the first two (traffic and conversions).

How I approach creating a marketing strategy is in multiple phases. The goal is to start by building the foundation from which everything else will operate.

Too many people build the roof before they pour the concrete. They jump into tactics to drive attention (i.e. Facebook ads) but completely skip everything that will help that attention convert (i.e. a good website or positioning strategy).

It's important to focus on long-term AND short term wins, but in the beginning, your time and resources should be skewed towards getting your fundamentals in order (your strategy, messaging, website, etc.).

Doing it in this order will eliminate a lot of wasted resources and time since you’re putting first things first.

Below is a guide to help you know what order to focus your attention and resources on. This isn’t an exact checklist, but it’s crucial to build more or less in the order outlined below.

You can download a PDF if you wish to have a referenceable file, or, I recommend visiting the Google Docs link included below and downloading or copying it to begin editing each section.

Complete this process and you'll be well on your way to success.

Yours,
